Soundboard. Two shows that night but they end up being about two slightly lengthy sets. Smoking Mason's Children to start. Great bluesy Black Peter. Funky a** Lovelight. Pigpen sounds loose and Jerry is killing the solos. Definitely a must listen to. Nice Uncle John's Band with noticeable keyboards to start second show. Easy Wind! Always a favorite.

the first show of 1970 is a monster, and a good omen of some amazing music to come in the next 4 years (i.e., the jams of '72-'74). the early show is fairly typical, but the first thing striking if that the also sprach zarathustra intro is BADASS! things get much more interesting in the late show, with a great easy wind that has the band flexing their funk. some technical problems lead weir to tell a story with a solo guitar monkey and engineer.

The Dark Star > Stephen > Eleven > Lovelight is an all-timer. Never mind that the end of Dark Star and the transition into SS is cut ... you know what it sounds like. Both of my parents worked at the FE for Bill Graham (who changed the trajectory of my life) and I was in utero at the time of this show (and many epic others!). This probably explains why I have held such an affinity for the GD since 13. This Eleven is outstanding and I wonder if I was giving my pregnant mother a pre-partum boogie listening to all these immense swirly Jerry Jams… and perhaps I was destined to get out to follow the Dead and pine away for Bobby Cowboy croons later on in life!
