Was reading “Searching for the Sound” and had to look up this show after Phil talked about it… and i can see why he devoted almost 3 pages to it. here are some notes I took from the book as I was listening: • Jerry says to Phil of the ABB on their way to this show: “make sure you check these guys out… they’re kinda like us… They jam hard” • Phil was startled when he heard Duane’s slide during Dark Star… Jerry hadn’t told him anyone would sit in • Gregg “slides onto the organ bench” during…

Well, there are a bunch of cuts which ordinarily wouldn't permit me to give a show 5 stars, originally I gave this show a 4. But after much listening to it, I changed my opinion. The playing is fantastic and the sound is pretty darn good too. And talk about guest stars. The Darkstar is facinating due to the addition of Peter Green, and Duane Allman on guitar and Arthur Lee from Love on percussion. It's much funkier and groove oriented than how the Dead normally play it.

Unbelieveably, the Dead played the Fillmore East TWICE in the winter of 70,a Jan and Feb run of shows which, in my opinion, may be the best of the entire year. This show is a "dress rehersal" for their monster 2-night stand on the 13th & 14th when they were touring with the Allmans. I was stunned the first time I heard this tape, and it never fails to delight and astound years later. The sheer energy and excitement come thru in every song.
