The Beach Boys — Played multiple songs with and without the Dead

another fantastic recording. Third night of a five night run. This is crazy show where the Beach Boys play a few songs with the Dead during the encore and they play a few songs by themselves too. Pretty weird. Very nice Mama Tried. They seemed obsessed with Merle Haggard during this run. Early energetic Bertha. Pigpen vocals and harmonica shine on Next Time You See Me. A rare track but then again that is a theme with this particular run (and especially this show.) Absolutely smoking Dire Wolf with great guitar work throughout. The section of this show is when it gets crazy with the Beach Boys playing and whatnot. Tons of songs I don't know if the Dead ever played again. Searching, Riot in Cell Block 9, Okie From Muskogee.

I've only got a couple of things to say - (3 actually - the most important one is a ;tldr warning) First about Garcia's pedal steel playing - I really enjoyed it. He seemed to pick things up pretty quickly. Not at all surprising given his level of enthusiasm and focus and hours and hours playing all sorts of music with anyone and everyone. He was definitely not even close to being among the best and he would be the first tell that to anyone who would suggest it.

I'm reading a lot of these peoples comments and reviews about this performance and seeing that this is not getting very over with most people, but let me make one thing very clear: I LOVED THIS. level with me here: i've never seen the Dead live. I got into the Grateful Dead summer 2020 after going down the rabbit hole that is the 1960s. I think context is super important, so when i see people here saying stuff like, "yeah. the beach boys here was a head scratcher" NOT REALLY, ACTUALLY.

We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee; We don't take no trips on lsd We don't burn no draft cards down on Main Street; We like livin' right, and bein' free. I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee, A place where even squares can have a ball We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse, And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all We don't make a party out of lovin'; We like holdin' hands and pitchin' woo; We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy, Like the hippies out in San Francisco…
