I saw the Dead many times from the East Coast to the Midwest and this Des Moines Fairground show was the best. I remember driving to DM with my GF and a couple friends in my 64 Biscayne, not knowing if the car would made it. In the middle of the first set we push and snake our way to the front rows and the energy there was most intense and unbelievable in a good way. The music was flowing from the inside and all around us.

Recording quality aside, let me reminisce. I was at this show. We camped in the fairground and partied most of the night. (Ahh the advantages of youth!) Anyway, this was the 4th time I had seen the Dead - and even the previous great shows (Chicago Ampitheater [1] and Champaign [2&3]) did not prepare me for this 3 set extravaganza, which included a short rain and great rainbow.

I too was at this Sunday outdoor event on Mother's Day I believe. 2 friends and I hitchhiked all the way from WIU also slept overnite at fairgrounds. I saw them at least 6 times in the 70's and this was the BEST they ever played, period. I remember the rain, then came the sunshine back as they played "here comes sunshine" and the double rainbow. Played ALL afternoon for hours, what a magical performance I will never forget. Thanks for the memory!
