I was there that night. My b'day was the 31st. Jerry's was at midnight. The band took a break after Playing in the Band. The crowd up front passed a birthday cake up on-stage. You can hear the crowd sing happy birthday. The energy was building. Roosevelt Stadium was buzzing. There was definitely something going "on," with all of us, including the band. No doubt about it. It was incredibly electric when they came back out to play. We were all charged up and ready for the 2nd set.

Hey man - I was there too, and the next night as well, BUT 7/31 was THE night. Nice review; too bad you lost your tape b/c in some ways it sounds better but lucky to have Jerry (Moore's) as well b/c D*** L. himself told me the SB for this night didn't survive in the vault before he upgraded the storage conditions. What's interesting is, as you say, it was one of the most energetic auds I've ever been a part of - but not just noisy - EVERYONE was LIT!

Forty year ago this month my older brother Donald took his 14 year old brother and 17 year old sister to our first Grateful Dead concert. He had a Mercedes Benz then too. But it was the kind that when I accidently locked the keys in it, I could crawl through a hole in the floor board to get in and unlock the car. It was an eye opening day, I drank beer and smoked little funny cigarettes that were passed to me. Today I emailed Donald the audio link to that concert.
