"Whats going on during the whole Phil and Ned part? The beginning is great with the beats and scratches that make it sound like turntablism, but I know they we'rent making those direct drive Technics decks back then and DJ q-bert probably wasnt even born yet. The sounds are great.....but then it kinda wanders off on us...if anyone can provide info, I'd be much obliged." Better late than never. I can answer your question as I discussed this specific performance with Ned in person.

The show that stands out at Winterland for being the most song-oriented on a VERY jam-filled week. Don't let anyone tell you they were getting tired in October. It's the most mellow month, to be sure, but the jams are as exploratory as ever. Jerry's playing with a warmer tone and an advanced melodic touch even for a year in which he excelled in both. Perhaps the tone of the guitar presaged 11/20/78's.

This recording puts you THERE! The sound of the instruments and vocals sounds like a soundboard recording, but there is ALOT of "good" crowd noise (clapping and chearing) that gives the recording an audience tape feel. The effect is of standing in the front row hearing the band cooking on stage with the audience going nuts around you. You HAVE to listen to this one and download if you dare - you may not listen to your other CDs again.
