I don't understand how an average show like 4/23 can get two dozen rave reviews and a top show like this gets an average of 4. Are people reviewing sound quality alone? This FM radio broadcast has sound that is better than most audience recordings. But the show is much better than 4/23 and others. This show comes out of the starting gate strong, rockin', and tight, both in playing and vocals. The jams are interesting. Jerry smokes in Sugaree. The set list isn't bad.

This was the first Grateful Dead concert I attended, and probably the best. It was broadcast live over WNEW-FM and the tapes were waiting for me when I got home thanks to my Mother. It was her first audio engineering attempt, and she did a pretty good job. I listened to those for about 25 years before getting the show on cdr. Now I am just 2 mouse clicks away from streaming the show. Long live the internet archive! The sound quality is just wonderful.

While some may argue, convincingly, that this version isn't perhaps the utter monster realized during other Feb-June shows (2/26, 3/18, 4/23, 4/29, 5/5, 5/19, 5/22, & 6/8), it is exceedingly sweet and heartfelt. Jerry's guitar simply weeps emotion. I'd contend that it is only in comparison to these other masterful renditions that this reading isn't viewed as "the best...." It's a true shame that this didn't make it on to the B&W video mentioned earlier.
