Bobby and Phil chastise the Duke Univ mgmt for keeping the houselights up during their first six songs at an early spring Wednesday eve at the In door Stadium. "Turn off the Houselights, dummy," roars Phil. The crowd roars in return. Were the lights left up for the gendarmes to nab evil cannabis smokers?

People are really jockin' the "U.S. Blues" in this show, but I was reviewing it solely for the "New Minglewood Blues," which is BY FAR the absolute best version of this song out there, even better than the 9.16.78 version from the Pyramids. I judge a good Grateful Dead song partly by the 'flashback effect,' or how quickly it evokes memories of past shows.

I agree that this is one of the best shows of 1978. The indication of a good show is if the first set is good. In this show, it is. The band is engaged, Jerry turns some nice licks on guitar, everyone's vocals are good, and there are some great extended jams. (There are a lot of good first sets in the '72-'77, with declining frequency after that.) First-set highlights include Peggy-o, Row Jimmy (which has a different take on rhythm midway), and Loser. Lazy Lightning has a very tight jam.
