  • ★★★★★ · A Game But Ailing Garcia - Still A Great Show! · BillDP · 2004

I'll never forget listening to this show on the radio back in '78 in great anticipation of hearing The Dead and seeing what might be in store for me as I had tickets to see them on 11/30 at Madison Square Garden. A smokin' Jack Straw kicked things off but it was apparent early that something was not right with Garcia. His voice was creaky, shrill, nasal and congested. Song two made that even more clear as a game but ailing Garcia gave it his all during Sugaree.

I tried for fit the shakedown, And no regrets whatsoever, the sound is everything I desired, I disagree with the comment " the first 30 seconds of shakedown are absolutely ridiculous", But I respect your opinion. My definition of ridiculous is 2:30ish into the 6-14-76 Help on the Way, check it out, jerry/keith and co galore. But, also responding to bongdonkey, Jerry's voice is NOT as spent as suggested, Yeah!!

  • ★★★★★ · At Their Best · deadheaddave · 2007

I have been listening to the Dead obsessively for 25 years, from really hissy auds to pristine Dick's picks. I have to tell you, this is the Dead at their very best. Garcia and the boys were hard touring, hard core, road hogs from day one. From the moment Jerry belts out his first vocal to JBG this show absolutley smokes. His voice has a sweet, congested, crackling flavor of a man who is totally run down from drugs and touring and this completely cracks me up.
