This is a smoker. The Minglewood opener is actually vicious. TLEO has amazing solos by both Brent and Jerry. Jerry turns keep going higher and higher; this one sounds like the Garcia Band version. A fast and raucous MAMU>River with Bobby in that fine 82 form and some ripping solos by Jerry and Brent. The other songs in the first set are sweet too. The Let it Grow is a brutal attack. Jerry is simply out of his head on this thing.

I looked high and low for years for a Scarlet>Fire I would love more than 9-25-81 at Lehigh U., and now I've found it (Thanks to a poster in forums answering my In Search of Scarlet > Fire Question)...I thank you profusely! This one not only has the requisite great jam build ups leading into critical points like the "Wind in the Willows" verse, but is actually perfect in terms of Jerry nailing the lyrics in BOTH songs (so rare to hear him get all of "Fire" correct) and he does it w/passion.

kudos to clugston for another great remaster and for hilighting some of the other fine musicians in this band. garcia's guitar playing is spectacular at times and a bit frenetic at other times, especially during the first set, not like a typical '82 IMO. the transition from scarlet to fire sparkles with keyboard and cowbell energy. i like the fact that garcia's guitar playing drops into the background during fire, allowing the listener to focus on the layered drumming and percussion out front.
