Jerry is very sharp and full of ideas and Brent is fueled, fluid, and flying. Friend of the Devil is both thoughtful and playful. loose, not somber. 5-star Bird Song with a tremendously energetic peak section. They get into that endlessly mutating merry-go-round vibe with Deal--oozing with creativity. Jerry's guitar on Lay me Down is wildly active and soulful. You hear the crowd appreciate it at end of the first lead break. Phil really brings it on this one, as does Brent at the end.

What an awesome evening of music. Only three years after the Miracle on Ice. Everything was just exactly perfect in that upside down inside out glory that was the Grateful Dead! Pure bliss, so glad I was there! The ending jam in Deal is mind boggling, it just keeps going and going. Bird Song is amazing, Sugaree is the best of the 80’s for sure. To Lay Me Down is stunning. What a perfect Dead show, one that leaves the “music” critics scratching their heads.

This is one of the most interesting shows in terms of song selection for Jerry. It is hard looking back to imagine Sugaree standing on it's own (ie not being segued from Bucket). This Sugaree is certainly one of the best, and they never played it with such energy after this - sans a few '85 versions maybe. FOTD is that babbling brook - as someone wrote slow but not plodding. Deal is always a great way to end a set. It makes you wonder what is in store for the second set.
