This will sound like I'm stealing Phil's lines from his interview in "The Grateful Dead Movie." During the show itself, I just couldn't find my happy place. It seemed like work, or forced, or maybe just the heat. I remember storming out quickly after the nights work was done, thinking I never wanted to tape another show. Two nights later, of course, back doing more of same. Listening to the tapes, they were wonderful. The Jack Straw opener was heartfelt from the first notes.

I got in w/ a 87 new years spare(there was room on the lawn)Jack Straw is a favorite although 87 version at end of third show w/Bill and Mickey INTENSE jamming drumming was better.87 i thought it, or I was going to explode.88 during Box during the end I will forever remember the feeling of joy and floating away across the beautiful meadow. still with me 22 years later.Loser GREAT Jerry singing and awesome solo. I love when he hits the feedback. Really awesome sound for a shed.

I've seen the Dead at Alpine Valley about 12 or 13 times. This show may be the best I've ever seen.... by anybody (Dead or otherwise). I remember it was 110 degrees outside during the day. Hot as hell on that sloping lawn. The moment that sticks out the most was the drums section. Just when it seemed like it was starting to wind down, Mickey Hart started playing a timpani-like drum and running up the scale at a faster and faster speed.
