So there I am standing on a corner in Berkley California in for three days at the Greeks and a Peace walk (1988) in the Park and someone hollers "hey Paul" well I'm the only one on this particular corner on this partuicular day, on this particular moment, and my name happens to be Paul - guess I'll turn around - and off we went like a shot - Janice my old friend from school, the radio station and back east - so's ya know the Dead always do this - to all of us - but you knew that - anyway - off…

To this day i SWEAR i was the first one (of the unknowing audience) to see Branford backstage warming up and getting his reed ready for this birdsong. our 'spot' couldnt have been better, one tier up, in this off-limits flat area, directly above the portal, stage left, behind stage. The stage was such that there was no obstacles to look through to see the band, and monitors on that both back corners made great sound.

Wasn't by choice but life just works out that way sometimes. Saw other iterations of the Dead later but, while fun, they weren't the same and just made me miss Jer even more. This is by far the best show I ever saw. I didn't get on the bus until the late 80s so that's not saying much. Still, I'd put this show up against any other. It may not come out on top but it definitely won't get embarrassed. Branford brought the band up to another level.
