Fourth night of a nine night MSG run. Tom Thumb's Blues is spectacular. Same energy as the last show in this run. Let it Grow is also pretty damn great.

But don't let that fool you. 9/10 was head and shoulders above the first 2 shows of this run, and gave birth to 9/12 - 14/91, 3 very high energy shows with creative setlists and tight, inspired jams. This one, my only birthday show in 35 or so with the Dead, was amongst my all time favorites. The first set was fun, bu it's the Sugar Mag>Sunshine Daydream Sandwich that you need.

So I was at this show (as well as the next two), and was deeply disappointed to have missed the Branford show preceding it. Nevertheless, I thought all 3 of these shows were solid with exquisite high moments. I must've been high because after listening to this show recently I completely missed the Dark Star teases between the I Want To Tell You tease and the start of Sugar Mags. More importantly, there is a distinct Spanish jam flavor at the 4 minute mark of Space.

IMHO, this is one of the weakest 1st sets of the Hornsby era. Jerry sounds like the last place he wants to be is standing on that stage. He is almost non-existent through large portions of the show (listen to the beginning of Let it Grow). It sounds like he is just rolling through the motions. Second Set: shows signs of significant improvement in terms of energy with the Foolish Heart being the pre-drums highlight. Terrapin is very well played as well, with much more emotion on Garcia's part.
