How Bruce's rig changed

  1. Final

    1990–1995

    Instrument
Baldwin concert grand piano (Bruce was a Baldwin artist during his GD tenure; switched to Steinway post-1995); Korg M1 synthesizer atop the piano; accordion for select numbers (RFK runs '92-'93 especially)
    Signal
Acoustic grand → Carl Countryman-style pickup → DI → keyboard mixer → arena PA. Korg M1 → DI → mixer (also accessible via MIDI from Vince's rig + the guitar pickups). Accordion mic'd through the vocal-mic chain.
    Defining
Bruce is the rare second-keyboardist who's also a first-tier session player — his presence frees Vince from solo duty + brings genuine virtuoso piano back into the band for the first time since Keith. The duet passages (Bruce on grand, Vince on Wersi pads) on shows like 7/19/91 Soldier Field are some of the densest harmonic work the band ever recorded live. Once Bruce phases out 3/24/92, the dual-keyboard era ends and Vince is solo.
    Dial in
Acoustic grand (or a high-quality grand-piano VST + weighted controller) + a polysynth on top for orchestral layering. The trick is the duet approach: leave space for the second keyboard, play harmonic structure (chord roots + 3rds), let Vince fill the rest. Bruce's solo passages on the GD recordings — especially on slower numbers — are gospel-derived voicings + pentatonic right-hand lines.
    Listen
9/15/90 MSG (Bruce's debut) · 7/19/91 Soldier Field · 3/24/92 Copps Coliseum Hamilton (last full tenure show) · RFK Stadium 1992-93 (accordion appearances)

SourcingBruce's GD tenure: 1990-09-15 → 1992-03-24 (~100 shows as a sit-in keyboardist alongside Vince after Brent's death; occasional sit-ins through 1995, including RFK '93 and 7/9/95 Soldier Field). Cross-checked against Wikipedia, the Substack keyboard-rigs article, and Steinway's artist page. Confirmed setup: Baldwin concert grand piano (exclusively — Bruce was a Baldwin artist at the time, only switching to Steinway post-1995) + Korg M1 synthesizer placed on top of the piano + accordion for specific numbers (notably visible at RFK 1992-93). The Korg M1's sounds were also routed into the band's broader MIDI patch bay — Vince's keyboard and Jerry/Bob/Phil's MIDI guitar pickups could all summon M1 voices when needed. Verify specific accordion model before publishing.
