Killer Big Boss Man. Locked in on one of the best Mr. Charlie. Strong Me and Bobby McGee to close out first set. Brokedown Palace is always a treat but this one is perfect. So intimate feeling. Plus they follow with Casey Jones to end the monster first set. Smoking Big Railroad Blues. Super clean Uncle John into Wharf Rat. Incredible 35 minute Dark Star and I swear it sounds like they are working out the main part of Eyes around 20 minutes in. So tasty before spiraling into complete psychedelic chaos. Strong Sugar Magnolia coming out of it. One of the best Comes a Time! Jerry’s vocals are so clean on it.

Then pull in for some more fuel because there is some high-octane energy in this fantastic download. The Europe '72 release that finally made me like the Grateful Dead could have easily included this set had they not been so constricted by album length and track selection. As it was I'm sure they had to convince the WB folks three albums would sell, let alone five! (It was three, right? Dang, it's been so long since I spun vinyl.) Anyway, the music is majestic.

This is just a one-disc show, but it's one of the best one-disc shows ever. UJB>Wharf Rat>DS>Sugar Mag? How can you go wrong with a songlist like that? The Dark Star is one of the more spacey and dissonant Stars of E72, and one of the best of this famed tour (right up there with 4/24, 5/11 and 4/14). The jam out of Uncle John's Band into Wharf Rat is really interesting--the harmonic territory of this transition is a must-hear. The Sugar Mag is excellent as usual.

right now it is! no, seriously, this is special - including what I believe is called a "feeling groovy jam" - keith shines in interplay with billy at one point before that jam, and phil is soulful and tight with jerry, who is of course, at the peak of his game (a peak that extended for a number of years) its sweet stuff. a truly great dark star - very jazzy - billy keeping it moving with a quick resonating beat - well recorded show too. mics in all the right places.
