If you remember from the Grateful Dead Movie, the Dead were considering retiring--they thought that this might be their last concert. You can tell that they wanted to go out on a high note. All the ballads and vocal songs are hot -- Tennessee Jed, usually just a funny song, is actually intense. Some of the songs we've heard over and over are really on: Cold Rain and Snow, Deal, El Paso, Jack Straw. Phil is in top form in Eyes.

This show is a "must have" for beginning collector or archivist. The Jack Straw, Brokedown Palace, China Cat Sunflower into I Know You Rider, Wharf Rat and several other tracks are standard bearers for the period and for the ages. The recording is very clean (and a little bit of crowd noise would reveal the magic and intensity of the evening.

I am a huge fan of '74 Dead, and I can't think of a better way for them to end the year. The 19th is so good, but this show, despite the occasional "tinny" sound, blows it out of the water. It is one of those shows that you put in for background music, and suddenly, you find yourself transfixed, jaw gaping open, and just stop to listen. Jerry and co. went out with a bang.
