12/31/76 A very solid opener to a stellar show. Jerry throws down a few fun licks in Promised Land. A quick happy new year from phil and Bob and off we go. Phil, who has made very clear in his book, is clearly happy to be back playing a full blown Grateful Dead New Years Eve show. Jerry misses a few words in Bertha and Phil drops a few licks of his own. He is on fire for essentially every note the rest of the way. Typical Mama Tried, nothing more, nothing less.

Only the second Good Lovin' since 1974 !!! Garcia gives a clinic for most of the show. One of the most unique sounding stand alone performances ever. A true masterwork of a show. From Playing In The Band on it is pretty flawless. TWO drum solos for a total of less than 2 minutes. The funkiest Samson and Delilah ever. Incredible Scarlet Begonias.

This show starts a little slow but the train starts building up steam around LL Rain and explodes into a deep Playin that ends set 1. The second set again starts off a bit slowly but by the time Good Lovin > Samson rolls around, it's a serious groovarama. The Good Lovin > Samson transition is a HUGE groove that I don't remember hearing before or since. Jamologists should check this jam out and keep it alive if it's not yet been "sampled." Disc 3 is what makes this show great.
