Allman Brothers members sit in for the third set of the longest show the Dead ever played, over four hours. The ABB opened the bill that day at RFK; Dickey Betts trades solos on That's Alright Mama.

Summer Jam at Watkins Glen, the largest concert in the world at the time (about 600,000). After the Allman Brothers closed with Whipping Post, members of the Allman Brothers Band and The Band joined the Dead for the festival finale: Not Fade Away into an extended Mountain Jam into Johnny B. Goode.

Lindley Meadows free concert, Golden Gate Park. Kingfish co-founder and Weir collaborator Matt Kelly sat in on harmonica for The Music Never Stopped.

First night at the Giza pyramids, Egypt. Nubian oudist Hamza el Din opened with his composition Ollin Arageed, joined by a Nubian choir, before the Dead came in.

Second Giza pyramids night. Hamza el Din again opened with Ollin Arageed and his choir.

Final, filmed Egypt night. Hamza el Din and his choir performed Ollin Arageed segueing into Fire on the Mountain, later released on Rocking the Cradle: Egypt 1978.

Winterland. Lee Oskar of War sat in on harmonica for Got My Mojo Working in the second set, captured on Road Trips Vol 1 No 4.

The Closing of Winterland. The five-hour New Years marathon featured several guest sit-ins, including John Cipollina on guitar, Lee Oskar and Matt Kelly on harmonica.

Oakland Auditorium, New Years Eve. Etta James and the Tower of Power horns powered the entire third set (Lovelight, Tell Mama, Hard to Handle, In the Midnight Hour), with Matt Kelly and John Cipollina also sitting in.

Opening night of the Dylan and the Dead stadium run at Sullivan Stadium. After their own two sets the Dead backed Bob Dylan for a full third set of his catalog, from Times They Are A-Changin' through All Along the Watchtower.

JFK Stadium, Philadelphia. The Dead served as Bob Dylan's backing band for the entire third set, a thirteen-song sweep of his catalog that opened with Tangled Up in Blue.

Giants Stadium. Dylan fronted the band for the whole third set, the Dead carrying him through Highway 61, Ballad of a Thin Man, and a closing All Along the Watchtower.

Autzen Stadium, Eugene. The Dead backed Bob Dylan through a third set built on Maggie's Farm, Tangled Up in Blue, and a deep run of his songbook.

Oakland Coliseum. After two Grateful Dead sets the band backed Bob Dylan for a third set of his songs, the West Coast leg of the summer collaboration.

Anaheim Stadium, the final night of the Dylan and the Dead run. The collaboration was released as the album Dylan & the Dead in 1989.

Buckeye Lake Music Center, Hebron OH. Bruce sits in on accordion for two songs, his first appearance with the Dead, two years before joining.

Madison Square Garden. Three songs on accordion and electric piano, a pre-membership guest spot during the Brent era.

Giants Stadium. The Neville Brothers came out during Drums and stayed through the end of the second set: Iko Iko, All Along the Watchtower, Morning Dew, Sugar Magnolia, Knockin on Heavens Door.

RFK Stadium, first night. Bruce guests on accordion for Sugaree and Man Smart (Woman Smarter), over a year before he joined the band.

RFK Stadium, second night. Bruce guests on accordion for Tennessee Jed and Stuck Inside of Mobile, a pre-membership sit-in.

Great Western Forum, Inglewood. An extended eight-song guest sit-in on accordion and keys, the deepest of his pre-membership appearances.

Branford's first sit-in with the Grateful Dead. He emerges for Bird Song late in the first set, then plays the entire second set, including a soaring Eyes of the World and an exploratory Dark Star. The complete show was released as Wake Up to Find Out (Nassau Coliseum, 3/29/90).

Carter-Finley Stadium, Raleigh. Eight songs on accordion. Brent's second-to-last run, two weeks before his death, and Bruce's last appearance as a pure guest before joining.

Oakland Coliseum, New Year's Eve. Branford plays sax across nine songs including the entire second set: Birdsong, Promised Land, Not Fade Away, Eyes of the World, Dark Star, The Other One, Wharf Rat, The Weight, Johnny B. Goode.

Branford returns to sit in across the second set, his saxophone stretching out through a searching Dark Star. The night chosen to represent 1991 on the 30 Trips Around the Sun box.

RFK Stadium. Bruce returns on accordion as a guest, his first sit-in after leaving the regular lineup that March.

Oakland Coliseum, Mardi Gras. Ornette Coleman (whose band Prime Time opened) joined for most of the second set, playing alto sax on The Other One, Stella Blue, and Turn On Your Love Light plus a free jam. Rolling Stone ranked it the #5 greatest guest jam in Dead history.

Capital Centre, Landover. Guest on accordion for the second set and encore.
